powerlifting Dear diary

Training this morning

2kg pb on bench but deadlift is down from last week (sort of). If I had made the fourth rep on my top set it'd be a 2kg pb as well but my back wasn't having any of it today. Still technically a pb for 3 but it's been a while so not sure

Could be from going heavier on squats yesterday that my back is a little fatigued. 
Left elbow flaring up some reason during my rest between bench sets which didn't get worse during sets so I'll keep going and see what happens. 
It made me reflect on the attitude people have towards pain in the gym. If your doing a sport of sorts you'll at some point experience some pain somewhere in the body. But people's attitude because it's sport is "just some pain doesn't matter". But as soon as there is some pain in the gym. Stop everything, rest a week, don't do that exercise again, go to doctor and panic. Like their body is a fragile piece of glass. 
I'm not sure where the hysteria comes from publicly because statistically resistance training has the lowest injury rate compared to sports, especially physical contact sport. 
This doesn't mean no pain no gain. It just means don't panic, make a calculated decision so you can keep training. 
Reduce the weight OR reduce range of motion OR change exercise OR rep range.

You'll be fine

Feeling burnt out n just fucking tired..
Working overnights on weekends as well as a day shift on Sunday with not much sleep but it is what it is..A man gotta do what a man gotta do..Fell asleep 1 meal short last night as well..Wrapped #Deadlifts with an  amrap set of 225x16 next post..Pushed myself harder on wide grip cable pulldowns up to top set of 205x8 dropsetting down 145x10 n 100x13(no footage)..Same with closegrip pullsowns etc.8 exercises done for this #Backday💪Gonna train 5 days straight this week as I cant get any training in on weekends..

powerlifting Case Study: Knee Pain During Squats

I had the opportunity to do some work while out in Sydney, Australia. Out of respect for this individual I won’t use his name. We were able to quickly get down the source of the problem in under an hour. He mentioned left knee pain because of deadlifting and he had neither deadlifted nor squatted much in about a year.
-
Movement Assessment:
He complained of left knee pain during bilateral squats so I had him perform a few. I noticed a few things:
•Right shift during squats
•Left foot instability
•Lack of overall tension
•I confirmed the suspicion of it being a stability issue during the single leg squat test.
-
Improving Tension
•First would be to correct the bilateral movement pattern.
•I cued him to create tension through the feet by thinking about using his hips to maintain proper foot position.
•Next I handed him a weight plate to perform raises as he squatted. We got an immediate improvement in position.
-
Secondly would be to address each individual leg. I used an RNT split squat to help coax each set of hip muscles to pull their weight and help him maintain alignment.
-
We were able to immediately perform landmine split squats with no discomfort. I forgot to take video as I was quite into coaching but we performed a few sets of trap bar deadlift, which I would add looked very good at 90kg.
-
Of note: I used zero manual therapy intervention. Not all pains require soft tissue work or continued treatment. Sometimes people just need good coaching.

Further Recommendations
•Continue split squats
•Slowly reintroduce Goblet squats to a box
•Improve single leg stance and foot positioning with drill like single leg stance KB passes
•Improve Hamstrings via tempo work with physioball leg curls

powerlifting I don't post enough benchpress videos, so here they are. 😋 245lbs/111kg x7 for the 6th set and 225lbs/102kg x8 for the 8th set. I think I finally found my sweet spot for grip width. I give props to people who have super wide grip no matter how short the bar travel is. Because I can't do it.

Anybody else do pullups for benchpress warmup?

powerlifting Feeling  plenty of gratitude lately even though life has seemed so busy with routine and not everything is going "right". When things dont go our way it's easy to focus on the negative, but usually there is a lot to be grateful for..even if it takes some work to find.

Im focused on finding lessons to learn from in my setbacks and hardships instead of wallowing in defeat or being reactive. Each day is a new day and each day can be great if we make it, there's always more to learn and to explore.

Also feeling great in this completely thrifted outfit from @platosclosetcalgaryne . Thrifting this week anyone?! •

powerlifting Personal growth has been the key since the beginning of 2019. I decided to be selfish and put myself first. I started making better decisions for my mental and physical health. I’ve come to the realization that good things take time, and focused on finding my own happiness. Getting to where I’m at now has taken a long 8 months, and I’m only coming up from here. That’s the thing that excites me the most. Overall I feel so damn good and that’s what really matters. I’ve found something that i’m completely passionate about, and i’m not letting anything get in the way of that.

powerlifting Let’s all give a big shoutout to August Athlete of the Month Shannon Marie Eisenhauer 💥 Shannon has had a hell of a transformation!! Come on, we’ve all seen the pics! She works hard on maintaining that healthy lifestyle and getting stronger and faster in the gym. Her passion for her job as an EMT really pushes her to be as fit as she can for her patients. If you’ve ever worked out with Shannon you know she always comes in with a smile, works hard, and cheers everyone else on! Thanks for being an inspiration to all of us. Well deserved! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 FACTS 👇🏼 I have been here at Andare for almost a year and a half. Prior to Andare I was at another CrossFit gym for less then a year. (Andare is wayyyy better!) But what got me started back into CrossFit was I wanted to become stronger. I had been losing weight but I felt I was losing muscle too. I knew when I had done CrossFit a few years prior, I felt so strong and missed that feeling. Little did I know joining Andare would be one the greatest decisions I have ever made. I have become stronger then I would have ever expected and I just continue to get stronger every day.

My favorite WOD/movement I would have to say is anything with squat cleans. It’s a movement I think I’m slowly progressing in and they are really fun to do! Also rope climbs have  become a new favorite now that I can do them lol

My least favorite would be snatches (it’s definitely a balancing act for me) and box jumps just because I’m terrified the box is going to eat my shins lol 
Top 3 goals would be to compete in my first CrossFit competition, actually do box jumps in a work out (not just like one or two), and just continuing to get stronger.

Advice for newcomers- trust the process for sure! Listen to your coaches! You will absolutely see results, but it takes time like with anything else in life. You will love it and love the changes your body goes through. Never feel forced to increase your weight or do a movement you’re not comfortable with. Everyone works at their own pace and you will get there eventually! Don’t make excuses for not showing up.
