mentalhealthmonday My anger is valid, my frustration is valid, my feelings are valid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anger is a normal emotion that we are allowed to express not repress. I can say that I am angry and that I disagree. Rather than bottle it all up until I slowly implode or explode. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That is when anger is dangerous when I see it as something I must hide or can't express. Anger Management is bullshit, you wouldn't get sadness management, fear or happiness management. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's about recognising ours, and others, values and triggers and how we can navigate our way through anger. There's nothing more empowering than being able to do this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then we can express our anger in a healthy way where we release it without violence, and remember you can be violent with your words too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHAT PISSES YOU OFF? LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

mentalhealthmonday A few weeks ago I baked a cake for my friend’s birthday. It turned out just like I envisioned - and I’m kicking myself for not taking a photo of it not in a fridge with other groceries in plain sight 🙄
•
Swipe to see my failed attempts. The first one that was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. The second one that was cooked on top and raw at the bottom. And the last one that erupted everywhere but was still suitable for decorating and serving.
•
It took THREE attempts to make that cake. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Who doesn’t like to eat cake?
•
But also this is what life is like, folks. It’s not a question if if you fail, but WHEN you fail at something. The cool part is, the choice is always yours as to wether or not you get to get up and try again or not ... unless that thing you failed at is skydiving or Great White taming.
•
But you get my point! The more ambitious your goal is, the more times you are likely to fail getting there. This is the part about Network Marketing I LOVE - the most successful people are the ones who have failed the most. They’ve heard the most no’s. They’ve had the most people ghost them.
•
And you know what the craziest part of this whole thing is? The price of failure is NOTHING. So you try this business and decide it’s not for you. You either send products back and get a refund or enjoy them at wholesale pricing. HOW IS THAT A BAD THING?! I see people who say no to this out of fear, who also do crazy things like jump out of airplanes, ski off cliffs, train wild animals or race motorcycles. Okay now THERE are some serious consequences if you fail.
•
Never be afraid to try something new. Jump in with both feet and see what happens. Where else are you going to find a high-reward/low-risk scenario?

mentalhealthmonday Dirty puppy paws & long hauls of hot sweat & tears and lots of 💩 scooping r finally paying off. Getting ready to breed our 1st set of rabbit beagles in the coming seasons.
This was a dream I didn't even know i had til my husband talked me into getting just 4 beagle puppies for rabbit hunting...14 dogs & 2 years later, here we are. I'm thinking of using this photo my son took for our new Kennels Logo. What do y'all think?
The significance of therapy or counseling is a huge part of "staying real" in my life, but if you don't want to actually go to "counseling", find something u love that helps ur mind relax & tune out all the things that cause u stress. These little dogs have been that for me...they r my therapy. It may be the unconditional love they give or the satisfaction of accomplishment when hours & hours of training pay off. Either way, I am blessed to have found "my healthy escape" (I hoped it would be excercise or working out, but NO such luck🙃). I've used many other forms of unsuccessful "self therapy" over the years to find that I am lucky to be given a 2nd chance @ getting this happiness thing right. Thank you Robert (my husband)! #bethepersonyourdogthinksyouare

mentalhealthmonday What do you wish you could be more open about?
-
I feel like this may be an odd topic BUT stick with me here. Me and my colleagues were talking about this today at work - how some people are completely private (which is their choice completely! And sometimes I wish I was the same) and some people are SO open and honest.
-
I feel as though I am an extremely open and honest person and sometimes I think it shocks people because I kinda don’t care about talking about taboo subjects. -
So my question for you all today is... What do you wish you were more open about? OR something you weren’t as open about? Let me know 👇

It’s been a while since everything has happened. My depression is slowly not ruining each and every day. But now I’m starting a relationship with someone new who has had dealt with the effects both depression and bpd give off. & honestly I’m terrified. I don’t want either to take control of who I am but sometimes it feels like that’s exactly what’s going on. That I’m just the passenger.

mentalhealthmonday Even if you know that divorce is the right decision — it can be difficult to let go. You start to think — “I’ll never find someone, I’ll be alone forever, I won’t be be able to bear the pain of the divorce itself”. You also know that you have tried everything from counseling to reading books to seeking marital advice.

The reality is divorce is painful and scary (especially if you’re anxiously attached).Divorce from a toxic love can feel like an addiction. You feel like a heroine addict looking for your next fix. Withdrawals can feel like you're taking a knife and cutting your arm of really slowly... it's extremely painful.

You are already in pain in your marriage, however, you are choosing to inflict yourself with more pain by deciding to end things. That is incredibly brave of you and know that it will get better.

mentalhealthmonday It was the day of one of my best friends weddings 6 years ago. I was the biggest I had ever been up until that point. I got dressed and my dress didn't exactly fit. It was much too tight and I could barely breathe. I remember having to stop dancing multiple times that night and go to the bathroom and have a friend unzip my dress so I could stop and breathe. I felt awful. And worse than that, these are the overarching memories and feelings I have from that day... Not joy, not love for my friends, not happiness. I shyed away from cameras. I shrunk into the background. I could have been so much more present. .
.
Fast forward 6 years to my other best friends wedding a few weeks ago. Again, the largest I've ever been, even bigger than I was before. But I was still so confident. I bought a bigger dress knowing I was having a baby. I spent the day admiring my bestie, loving on her and her new hubby, dancing with my son, husband and friends. I had the best time! I was the best version of me!
.
.
Why? I've learned that my size doesn't define me. That my besties love me and want me there no matter what I look like because they want to be surrounded by love! And I know I have so much love for my friends! I did the work on my mindset so that my shape and size weren't my focus. .
.
I don't want you to shy away from the important moments. I don't want you to live your life in the background worrying about your size or shape. I'm here to help you live your life to the fullest, love your body at any size because you truly LOVE yourself and enjoy those happy moments with your family and friends! 💛 never stop fighting for who you want to become!

mentalhealthmonday What a beautiful quote from my dear friend, Raymond, in reference to this new chapter in my and my son’s life?! ❤️🖋He begins his new independence as a college student, and I am an empty nester! 😯. It is so true, isn’t it: we must say goodbye to one era for another new one to begin. 🤔. For Jeffrey to begin his adulthood, we say goodbye to his childhood. I may shed a tear or two over that, but I’m so thrilled to begin our relationship as two adults. 😢🙏😎🙋‍♀️💁🏼‍♂️. We can release the old and embrace the new...even in the uncertainty of the unknown...and that can being peace. 🙏😇. Hope you all have a wonderful Thursday, friends!! ☀️✨🌅🌸🌈🙏😇🙋‍♀️

mentalhealthmonday The present moment isn't always a place of rest, and can instead be full of anxiousness, fear, stress and panic. Mindfulness help you learn to stay with these difficult feelings without analysing, suppressing, or encouraging them, safely explore the underlying causes and create a space where these worrisome feelings don’t consume you.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your mindfulness exercises! -	Make an extra effort to pay attention, for example during your morning shower, how the water feels on your skin. -	Notice where and when your mind tends to wander off and choose to return back to present moment. I like doing this by gently rubbing by finger on my palm or focusing on my breathing! -	Observe and be aware how you are feelings so you accept them without judgment and guilt. -	Be kind to yourself, because its normal for our minds to wander. Gently bring yourself back to the present moment, that’s all. -	I also like to set aside a time to practice my exercises, for example, the time before I go to bed. -	Go slow and take your time building the practice. It’s not going to happen in a day. Be patient with yourself. -	And last, experiment with your exercises because what may work for someone else doesn’t have to work for you. So, take your time to figure out what works for you.

Hope these help you like they help me! I’d love to hear any other tips that work for you!

mentalhealthmonday Far too often, the power of positivity is hugely misrepresented, or perhaps just misinterpreted. We start simply suppressing everything we deem as negative or uncomfortable, and that is simply not healthy. Because all our emotions matter, all of them have a part to play and we have to honour and acknowledge them. In The Language of Emotions, Karla McLaren explains that we have come to use our emotions in a way to make other people comfortable, rather than interpret and use them to navigate our own way through the world.

So if we are not supposed to stop ourselves from feeling the negative emotions, then what is the actual point? Because we don’t want to become emotionally stagnant.

The “negative” emotions, the ones that trigger our survival more, they scream at us. They demand attention because they need us to take action. There is no point to the panic of a tiger on the path if the feeling goes unnoticed and we continue to stroll along, right into the tiger’s claws. Positive feelings like joy or hope, don’t have the same volume though. Besides, we are used to listening to our shouty emotions. As abuse survivors especially, but news, marketing, Facebook… there is lots of noise in our lives that creates worry, anxiety, fear, and anger.

We have to create habits that drown out some of that noise, so we don’t get lost in the anxiety and bitterness of our experiences. Because, as much as we have to process the complicated stuff, we shouldn’t get stuck in that place either. In order to become unstuck, to get out of that constant survival mode, we have to train our brain to look for the positive stuff. It’s like Finding Waldo, but with optimism.

We have to care for ourselves in order to care for others. We cannot give and give and give if there is nothing replenishing what we give. It’s important to recognize your own needs while caring for the needs of others. Those of us in helping professions need to keep this in mind, as our job can take a toll. We need to remember that in order to be present and engaged, we need to be sure to take time for ourselves and our needs. . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am in no way saying that if you are struggling, you cannot help someone else. What I am saying is that both you and the person you are helping are human beings. Human beings who need rest and care and help. So don’t forget to put yourself on the list of all the things you need to take care of. You can take care of yourself AND help others too. 💖⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

mentalhealthmonday It’s a family affair!

Yup we all do it. The hubs, the kids, when the uncle. Lol!

We all get our workout in and put in the effort.

The kids seem to be following our example and what else can you ask for? “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.” Did you put in your effort today?
Did you set an example for you children?
What did you do?

mentalhealthmonday As promised, here are some tips, tricks and life hacks to help you get past your fear of flying.

Just to recap, I went from sky diving, taking flying lessons and flying 3 days a week to not being able to even drive past an airport. One massive panic attack on a commercial flight did me in. That’s all it took.

It took me 3 very long years to get back in the air, but I did it. And through it all, I learned a lot.

Here we go:
⠀⠀
Step 1: Freaking out on a flight or just feeling scared to death to fly is a huge bummer and barrier to life experiences. Get some help. Therapy, trauma specialist, hypnosis, whatever. Reach out and get a pro on board to help you squash this terrible phobia. .

Step 2: Drugs. If you need them to fly, talk to your doctor and get a prescription. There is no pride in destroying your nervous system every time you fly the friendly skies.

Step 3: Start flying. Travel by plane as much as you can. The longer you wait in between flights, the longer it’s going to take to confidently get back in the saddle.

Step 4: Upgrade your seat whenever possible, or at least pre-pick where you want to sit. I strictly fly United in order to rack up miles. Then I use those miles to upgrade whenever possible. It has been a life saver (sweet relief!!) to have some room on a flight.

Step 5. Join a Club in the airport, like the United Club. It will set you back a couple bucks, but trust you me, it’s like a calm oasis in a sea of crazy when you’re in a busy (and stressful!) airport.

Step 6: Rinse and repeat. Continue flying. It gets easier every time you fly, until one day you realize you are free. Free from the terror and fear. Free from avoiding travel. Free from missing out on amazing places. Then it’s smooth sailing.
⠀⠀
So, sit back, relax and enjoy your flight ladies and gentlemen. Prepare for takeoff✈️

mentalhealthmonday 📰TODAY'S NEWS regarding mental health. On July 21st Oregon passed a new law allowing students to take "mental health days" just like they would take sick days. May this serve as a reminder to take mental health days. As it is the best thing to do not only for yourself, but for the ones you love. Click the link below or the one in our bio to read about Oregon's new law.

mentalhealthmonday Instagram is a helpful way for therapists to spread awareness for mental health. It is an outlet for therapist to share the knowledge that they have. However, it’s not therapy. Therapy is a space for you to be heard and validated, a place where you can speak your truth without judgement, and a place where you can work towards healing.

mentalhealthmonday In our last post, we spoke about Mindfulness. In this busy world of ours, where our minds are constantly pulled from pillar to post, one item to the next on our to-do list, our scattering thoughts and emotions and leaving us feeling stressed, highly-strung and at times quite anxious.

In such a scenario, it is essential for our mental wellbeing to take a few minutes each day to cultivate mental spaciousness and achieve a positive mind-body balance.

So, here are some simple exercises I practice that you could try today:

Mindful Eating
This involves paying attention to the taste, sight and textures of what you eat. For example, while drinking your morning coffee, take a moment to focus on how hot it feels on your tongue, how sweet it tastes or watch the steam that it gives off.

Mindful Exercising
Try paying close attention to the road you’re walking on, feel the breeze against your skin and the smells around you. My Zumba trainer Ahaha, @ahanac42 advocates this too. She stresses on how important it is to focus on your breathing while doing any kind of exercise; knowing when to breathe in and when to breathe out is crucial. She’s also always telling us to also smile and actually enjoy our workout rather than consider it just another task that you’re doing. And I can tell you it makes all the difference!
Mindful Colouring and Drawing
I’ve been using a mindfulness colouring book for almost 2 years now. Colouring slowly, carefully choosing whether I want to use a colour pencil or a brush pen and picking my colours helps me calm down.

Mindful Meditation
Just sitting quietly and focusing on your breathing, your thoughts, sensations in your body and the things you can hear around you can be really helpful too!

Different things work for different people, so it’s a good idea to experiment and find what suits you and is easy to fit in with your daily life.
I’d love to hear how you practice mindfulness! You could leave them in the comments below.

mentalhealthmonday Being mentally healthy can take the same effort and dedication that it takes for an athlete to be physically fit. It usually requires engaging in therapy, seeking out psychoeducation about your diagnosis, building self awareness, creating coping mechanisms for things that you struggle with, building mastery (ex. working towards a professional goal), accumulating positive emotions, eating well (Whole Foods), avoid mind altering substances (drugs and alcohol), balanced sleep, and exercising. The effort will be worth it. Start now by doing something you enjoy that brings some positive emotions to you. I believe you can start today. 🙌🏼❤️ ————————————————————————art cred: @spoonie_village ———————————————————————— #complextrauma #complextraumaawareness #complextraumarecovery #complexposttraumaticstressdisorder #depression #depressionhelp #anxiety #anxietyrelief #anxietyproblems #anxietyattack #panicattack #stress #developmentaltraumadisorder #developmentaltrauma #developmentalpsychology #socialworker #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmonday #mentalillness #dissociation #emotionalflashbacks #abuse #acutestressdisorder #addiction #recoveringaddict #recoveringalcoholic #angermanagement #attachmentstyles

mentalhealthmonday Great post by @angelanicole_f on #burnout. In my experience, identifying burnout was such a challenge...before I could find ways to deal with it. But once I knew how burnout looked for me, reminding myself it was time for a mental health break or self care time has been truly life changing ....no more anxiety or tensed muscles/pain. #publichealth work, especially if you're a passionate one, can take a toll on you, so prioritize self care, so that you can help the world. The world needs you 💜

It’s #MentalHealthMonday 🥰 Burnout is common especially in the fast paced world we live in. It’s important to be able to recognize when you’re experiencing burnout. I believe it’s even more important to know how to proceed forward when this occurs. If this is currently you; I have 3️⃣ tips that you can incorporate this week 1. Prioritize by significance level. Think about what really needs to be done now 📝 2. Wait at-least 30 minutes before responding to others so you don’t respond with emotion 🤮 3. Set the mood for bedtime 30 minutes prior to your normal time with soft music and the television off 🛏 🎶 Happy Mental Health Monday! 💚

mentalhealthmonday Late for #mentalhealthmonday. It was a long Monday. I was exhausted. Which made me think about the effects stress has on children. I often have parents ask about kids- wondering if they are “ok”. If your kid won’t speak to you about feelings, look for physical signs. The body will expose stress one way or another. Just like adults who get physically sick from stress, kids’ bodies will show is something is going on.

mentalhealthmonday One of the most beneficial life habits I think I’ve developed over the past few years is practicing emotional boundaries.

I finally understood that I didn’t have to own or consume every fear, opinion, stressor or negative reaction of those around me. That I could make a conscious choice, differentiating what thoughts and emotions belong to me and which belonged to others.

We live in a very reactive society in an age of social media where we pick up an overwhelming amount of content quicker than the time to process it.

But it’s not just social media. It could be family. It could be friends. It could be coworkers. It could be the person who responds to you with a projection of their own fears. The person who always has something negative to say about someone or something and wants you to feel the same way even though you have no personal reason to.
_
Even if it’s checking in with yourself by giving a simple prompting of, “It’s interesting that they feel this way about this. How do I feel?” Remember that you can practice the pause for your own individual process. You no longer have to own what does not belong to you. ❤️
