IBS quid? Irritable bowl syndrome or in French syndrome du colon irritable. Be ready this post is about to get real. Why do I want talk about this? Because it’s real life, because it’s a part of me that is not always easy to live with and not being able to talk about it makes it harder. People are also going through the same thing, so in this area of no taboo, I am using this to help myself and help people understand. 
6 years ago, right after I came back from my exchange in Canada I started to have really bad stomach aches, the kind that makes you run to the bathroom. I though okay just a question of getting adjusted back home again. Then it was starting university in a new city, adjust and make friends. Then I thought maybe it was the beer, you know partying a bit too much, then the stress of exams, then ... nothing I had no excuses but to realize something was wrong with me for now 6 months. ⠀
Some days I would go to the bathroom 8 times before even leaving my place to go to class. Soon I stopped going to class sometimes because I was afraid or felt very sick. I would take some medication to stop everything to make sure I would have no bathroom emergency. 
But it didn’t take the pain away. The very vivid pain, felt like getting stabbed in the stomach really fast. It was short but very intense. I would get very pasty, couldn’t talk for a couple minutes. I would be just pain and couldn’t not focus on any thing. ⠀
Then we decided to do something about it. Not here comes the part about different tests, trying to find out if maybe I had crohn disease, gluten or dairy already, if I had contracted a bacteria or something. I needed to know what was wrong with me and how to stop it. 
Finally after a long time, the only answer was that medically nothing was wrong with me. ⠀
I wasn’t sick, but I still felt sick. Then they said it was IBS. A very broad term to cover any unexplained gut problem.
No explanation and no treatment. I had then to figure out « on my own » what to do.

ibsawareness Traveling is not only about happy times! You always bring yourself and life just happens like it does usually. So, as I am super sensitive -which mostly is quite okay- that sometimes means having a hard time when it comes to food. It’s not always so hygienic and/or not so healthy as I am used to. So I ended up, a few times😕, having problems with my bowel system. And that means for me -having a thyroid disease- that my thyroid system is less balanced than it ought to be. That about the down side. Both first pictures are relaxed and  then the second are flexed. This is also first thing in the morning before any food or water!!! If only my stomach could stay like this all day 🙏🏻 #ibsstomach 
Just know that i don't care that i don't look like the flexed version of myself all the time and that I am proud of how far I have come, even if it isn't "Instagram" perfection.....😊 For those of you feeling like progress is slow, just remember it's still progress!! ibsawareness One of my most proud moments lifting lately. Personally I never thought I would be in this situation of being able to do this. In my 20s I had 2 brain surgeries due to my hydrocephalus that left me in a chair for 4 and a half years. I lost all my muscle, weight, and had my body failing where doctors didnt know what to do.

I couldnt look people in the eye literally, and had to close one eye to look at things because my chin was touching my left collarbone. I let my hydrocephalus almost kill me because I lost the will to fight. I lost hope in everything and it became easy to just give up. Which for anyone it can feel easy to just slip into that way of life.

It got to where I couldnt watch my family fall apart from seeing me die. So it was either get better or it was assisted suicide to not suffer anymore. If you want to know the turning point for me it was @madflavors_world saying "Ain't nothing happening on the couch" that resonated with me for some reason. Then started my journey to get my life back doing a pushup a day till I could progress. ibsawareness So let's talk food. I've got Crohn's/Sibo, among other autoimmune responses from this. My life has been a battle for the last 10 years almost on figuring out what I can eat. I've done it all from Vegan to Carnivore and everything in between.

To me diet is all about finding the right fuel for your body and find what works. It's all about finding what you can eat consistently and not struggle to maintain. For me the best response I've had is with Low Fodmap/Paleo, and I'm just now figuring it out.

It's been one hell of a journey, but I'm finally getting better at stacking things for meals. The one hard part for me is making sure I dont eat to soon between meals, and be more strict on my intermittent fasting. I will be posting videos on Low Fodmap/Paleo recipes, and cooking tutorials on here to help anyone on that journey.

ibsawareness Foods that trigger IBS varies from person to person but I have listed the main ones below. These foods cause irritation due to intolerance and inflammation OR/AND feed bacteria in the small intestine, which produces gas and bloating.

Fruit and vegetables skins
Dairy
Starchy carbohydrates 
Alcohol
caffeine
fructose
sorbitol
fried and fatty foods
carbonated drinks
onions
garlic
lentils
spicy food

These foods and more trigger symptoms and so are best avoided whilst addressing the root cause. 
However, it is still very important to eat a variety of different vegetables every day as they contain key phytonutrients and fibre important for maintaining a healthy colon.

ibsawareness For most of this year I haven’t felt good. Diagnosed IBS, not pushing myself hard enough, trying to “maintain” (that’s just as hard as losing btw 😑). But 50 days ago, I said enough! Not feeling good is motivation enough for me to get my ass moving, so here I am... making adjustments again and still showing up because I literally NEED to!

#CrohnsDisease causes inflammation of the digestive system or gut. Crohn’s Disease can affect any part of the gut, though the most common area affected is the end of the ileum (the last part of the small intestine), or the colon.

The areas of inflammation are often patchy with sections of normal gut in between. A patch of inflammation may be small, only a few centimetres, or extend quite a distance along part of the gut. As well as affecting the lining of the bowel, Crohn’s may also go deeper into the bowel wall.

ibsawareness Last week I posted about cortisol and HPA dysregulation as a commonly overlooked root cause of anxiety. This week we’ll look at another overlooked contributor: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). ⠀
We’ll get more into specifics later, but PCOS is associated with blood sugar and hormonal dysregulation. The ripple effect of this stress on the body, as well as emotionally dealing with associated issues like alopecia and infertility, can all contribute to anxiety. A 2018 Swedish study even suggests a possible increased risk of anxiety in kids born to mothers with PCOS. The effect is profound to say the least. So no— it’s not just in your head!⠀

The old version of me would have beat myself up for the rest of the week and insisted I start Monday. In my mind it needed to have a clean fresh slate. I couldn’t start in the middle of the week.

Now, I’ve learned to give myself a little GRACE.

There are a number of reasons I didn’t work out the last 4 days, but there are also a number of excuses. That’s okay. What matters now is that I get back on track. And I’m starting tonight.

I’ll be working my second job until about 9pm, but then you better believe I’m checking in with my workout, and I’m counting on you all to hold me accountable.👊🏻

ibsawareness Cooool new things are coming my way! Spent my afternoon in a consultation for a clinical trial for patients with Functional Dyspepsia and/or Gastroparesis. I don't want to jinx it, just waiting on a few records but I have a second appt scheduled and will hopefully be moving forward!

Today was the first of five appointments, and the study will be focused on stimulation of the vagus nerve in correlation to my Dyspepsia symptoms. I'll definitely be sharing more throughout this process and adding a story highlight so please feel free to drop any questions below!!

ibsawareness PCOS ladies here’s one for you ❤️ Who else does this absolutely cripple, I do suffer with IBS on a normal daily basis but this stuff kills me off ! I take 2000mg a day to aid my weight loss, lessen my symptoms and 🤞🏼conceive at some point and I feel nauseous 24/7 and feel like I could poop constantly 🚽🧻🤷🏻‍♀️ how does anyone deal with this please tell 🙄

Tonight we tried @chaochaourban and I had the crispy chicken sweet & sour and chips from their gluten free menu. Their dishes also don’t contain msg, which is one of my biggest intolerances. It was soooo nice to have a takeaway again that is safe for my tummy🤰🏼
So much flavour and didn’t feel heavy like takeaway food normally does 🎉
Marc had belly pork & crispy salt & pepper squid 😋

When they announced this week on The Bake off would be dairy week, I didn't know what to make since I can't eat dairy 😅 So I thought about what dairy thing I would make if I could eat it and decided on chocolate fudge cake 🤤 Then I stumbled on @wifemamafoodie 's vegan recipe and oh my god it is amazing, who knew dairy free ganache could taste so good 😍😋

ibsawareness Remember when we were children and got excited about everything? 
Playing in the rain. Going for a sleepover. Finding a pound coin. Having a hot chocolate by the fire. Exploring secret parts of the garden. 
We embraced the world and life at its most basic level, entranced and obsessed with experiencing it all. ‘I’m not sure’ or ‘maybe later’ weren’t really phrases we ever used. We didn’t doubt our decisions or what we were doing. Regrets weren’t even in our vocabulary.

There was no fear of hurting ourselves as we clambered up trees or somersaulted on trampolines. We thought we were invincible little sods, and WE JUST DID IT. 
It’s so easy to forget all of that and be overwhelmed by ‘adulting’ and all the worry, commitments and responsibilities that consume our mind. 
The world used to be our playground. Now, more often than not, it’s this crazy place, which holds so much fear for us. A world where we never feel enough, or that we’re doing enough, self-doubt paralysing us from taking the next step. 
So, I challenge you tomorrow... To just think and be like a child for the day. (Job depending obvs, but even then the perspective shift could be huge). Get excited by the little things. Get excited by anything that makes you happy and laugh. 
Say YES to more. Risk more. Start that project you’ve been putting off. Basically go find the BIG ASS BALLS that your younger self had. Rediscover your inner child. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen? #pleasedontgetfired

ibsawareness “Hannah, why are you showing us a picture of cottage cheese?” Are you an ingredient reader when you grocery shop? Are ingredients important to you? I was shopping for cottage cheese the other day and this is the ONLY one that has only these ingredients: Cultured skim milk, cream, salt.

All the other cottage cheeses had maltodextrin, guar gum, citric acid, carrageenan, locust bean gum, artificial flavor, xantham gum added to them-  just to name a few.😮😬 All of these crappy fillers in cottage cheese! So many of our products are loaded with unnecessary CRAP! Including the shampoo we use!

As someone who has had to put lots of chemicals in to my body thanks to my #chronicpain and #IBS it has been important to me this past year to switch out the products I’m using and try and eat better food not loaded with filler (I still can’t say no to @mcdonalds french fries though.) So when I found Monat back in June, I knew it was haircare I could stand behind as they say NO to all of that unnecessary CRAP. They say no to sulfates, silicons, waxes, fragrance, parabens, and toxins. They’re committed to not using CRAP in their products which I appreciate.

Having IBS has not been fun but it has taught me how to truly take care of my body.
To be aware of what I eat and listen to my body and how it responds to the food I eat.
I know that when we hold on to pain of the past, hurt, how people treated us; we can easily become dis-eased.

ibsawareness i haven’t been able to make a beautiful aesthetically pleasing oat bowl since june. since JUNE, guys. if you’ve been following me for a while, then you know all about my beautiful oat bowls. saying goodbye to them was a sad day.

i distinctly remember @lkpetrolino giving me my initial diet plan and telling me “your chefs heart will be broken.” and believe me, it was. the only carbs i had during phase one were white rice, blueberries and carrots. and well, you can’t make a pretty OAT bowl with those 3 ingredients 😂

but another thing laura promised me was that this wouldn’t be forever. and she was right. look at me now, eating this pretty oat bowl and having minimal symptoms 🙋🏼‍♀️ elimination diets can SUCK, i know. but the important thing to remember is that they are not (and SHOULD NEVER BE) forever.

Hey, it's wellnesspass, I’m back. Sorry for my absence, I was away on vacation in Norway with my family. 
It was my first visit following the macrobiotic dietary principles. To be honest, it wasn’t easy but it wasn’t hard either. ⁣
⁣
I wanted to make sure that my diet won’t be affected because of traveling, so I took my meals with me. All this for the sake of my healing process.⁣
⁣
It is a 6 hour flight from Dubai to Oslo, so I also took my lunch with me. While in Norway, my mom actually cooked for me because I was travelling with her. ⁣
⁣

What I see when I look at myself when I'm in my most pure and honest state- skin, muscle, softness. There are things I like, things I don't, things I used to wish to change and a few body parts that held together my fragile self esteem. This body is gonna change like it always has, and I strive to love it every day whilst I am still breathing. It's been a hard journey to accept myself, especially the days I'm severely bloated and feeling like I look pregnant, worried people will ask me "how many weeks", no matter what I wear. Or the days my A-cup breasts combined with my baby face and 5ft stature, made men treat me like I was a child and I could be perversely sexualised (yes, it happened often). I am lucky in so many ways but have always been at war with myself. Finally, I've given up fighting for love. I hope no matter where you are on your self love journey you realise how IMPORTANT it is to know that your body does not need to fit "standards", and you do not need to accept the societal or patriarchal gaze that judges human bodies so harshly and needlessly. You are ENOUGH however you exist 💕

a few weeks ago, the idea of taking supplements in the mornings made me feel 😷... so I just stopped taking them altogether

ibsawareness Oh hey IBS, how did it feel to get your butt kicked yesterday? 👊
I had made plans weeks ago to visit my friend in Limerick and go out on the 16th but when I woke up yesterday I felt horrendous. My IBS decided to team up with my period and I was in so much pain and honestly just felt flattened. I didn't feel like I could leave my house or go to college, let alone drive an hour and a half down the country to go out to a nightclub. 
But I gave myself a little pep talk in my bathroom and decided I wasn't going to let my IBS control my life or ruin my plans anymore. So I dragged myself out the door and went to the gym. 
I don't know what it is about the gym for me but I swear it has some magical healing powers 😂 I felt like a new person afterwards. I still had some pain throughout the day but I chose to ignore it and I kept my food simple. 
I am honestly so proud of myself for fighting against my IBS and just getting out the door; it's so easy for me to just give in and crawl back into bed and cancel all my plans. 
I'm sure this won't always be the case, but yesterday I didn't let IBS win 💪

ibsawareness Coconut Chickpea Curry for today’s lunch y’all ✨😍 I woke up not feeling very good but I decided to keep me motivated and relaxed by cooking one of my favorite meals, which turned out to be the perfect comfort food for this cozy September day 🍜 
The recipe is easy and fast: just put a pan on medium heart and add 1 tbsp of evoo or coconut oil, then half chopped onion and let it fry for 1-2 minutes, later add the chickpeas and the spices ( I added curry, garam masala, salt, pepper, nutmeg), stir for 1-2 minutes, add a can of full fat coconut milk, stir everything and cover for 15 minutes. In the meantime I cooked the basmati rice so that they were both ready at the same time. When the curry was almost ready I added grated carrots and parsley which are my personal additions and I love them. 🦋

My time away was very much needed (and taking a step back from social media is something I recommend you all do every now and then), however, part of my mantra is to be real, no matter what life throws my way, and helping and inspiring others is a big part of why I share my journey.

All of you OG followers know that I've dealt with my fair share of gut issues in the past. From being diagnosed as Celiac in 2010, overcoming an eating disorder in my early 20's, then battling IBS, food sensitivities and various other ailments, its been quite the process. The past few years I have really truly made my gut health and overall physical health a priority. After years of schooling studying microbiology and health sciences, my own personal research, and 3 years of working with a naturopath and undergoing numerous gut-healing protocols, I thought I had dug my way out of the darkness...

Fast-forward to this summer. About a month or so after coming out of competition prep, the universe threw several unexpected curve balls my way (topic of conversation for a later date). With the onset of a high-stress period of life, both my gut health and my mental health took a deep dive. I began experiencing the worst symptoms I have to date - SEVERE exhaustion, brain fog, anxiety, depression, food sensitivities, EXTREME bloating (scroll ➡️ for photo)...the list goes on. After a barrage of bloodwork, it was determined that my hormones (not one, but ALL) have plummeted into the pre-pubertal/postmenopausal range, with no clear answers as to what is going on with my gut...

It has become painfully obvious that years of dieting, over-training and chronic stress have not served me well. Despite having spent my most recent years really learning the ins and outs of fitness and nutrition, completely revamping my diet and relationship with food and prioritizing my physical well-being, I can honestly say I have not put much effort into my mental health, nor have I been able to undo some of the damage that had been done in the past.
