_______________
The Temple of Garni is the only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia and the former Soviet Union. An Ionic temple located in the village of Garni, Armenia, it is the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia. The structure was probably built by King Tiridates I in the first century AD as a temple to the sun god Mihr. After Armenia's conversion to Christianity in the early fourth century, it was converted into a royal summer house of Khosrovidukht, the sister of Tiridates III. According to some scholars, it was not a temple but a tomb and thus survived the universal destruction of pagan structures.

tiridates Figure 1: Usually when we think of Cataphracts we think of the
Byzantines, but here is a Armenian cataphract with the Artaxiad dynasty emblem on his spear. Notice the length of the spear, his heavy armour and the armour of the horse. These point towards the fact that it is a heavy shock cavalry. This means that they use the long spears to skewer enemies through devastating charges, however more damage is done by the speed of the horse, who tramples over many stationary infantry troops and causes extra damage due to the armour. The cataphracts are not suited to prolonged melee combat.

Figure 2: The Artaxiad footmen were equipped with lamellar armour, not as heavy as plate, but stronger than leather. His large shield provides opportunity for shield wall formations, however he is lightly armoured, meaning he is more maneuverable. As you can see, the emblem of the Artaxiad dynasty is on his shield meaning this soldier was from the era of around 189BC to 12AD

Figure 3: Here we see Artaxiad footmen in a shield wall formation. I would not consider this a phalanx since a phalanx constitutes of many more layers of pikes and phalanx shield are much larger in shape. Notice the dirks at their side for use when the shield wall formation breaks.

tiridates Figure 1: This figure shows a Cilician guardsman donning his crusader cross over his chainmail. See my earlier post for crusade information. On his shield is the Bagratid coat of arms. However, Cilicia was ruled by the Rubenid dynasty which is a supposed offshoot of the Bagratid dynasty.
Figure 2: Bagratuni era heavy infantry were typically used in siege and siege defence, due to their heavy weapons. They could easily crash through a shield wall in a flurry of bone crushing axe or greatsword blows. They wore a combination of lamellar armour (pieces of plate riveted horizontally together) and chainmail.
Figure 3: Here we see palace guard, they wore more decorative armour as seen on the macemen.
Figure 4: This may seem like normal cavalry at first, but he does not wield a spear. Spear wielding cavalry use hammer and anvil tactics to quickly charge the enemy and pull back out then charge again. This cavalry however, wields a sword and dons heavy armour, meaning once he charges into battle, he stays there cutting enemies from a higher position. The horse has no armour since it makes many directional changes to accomodate for the rider to strike foes.

tiridates Ancient Armenian mythology was influenced by Mesopotamian, Greek and Persian mythology. The Gods worshipped in Urartian times are more nature based, I find the Zoroastrian and Greek influenced mythology more fascinating.

tiridates The story of Armenia’s Christian history. The fourth century pagan king Tiridates kills some nuns and turns into a boar. Having realised his punishment he acccompanies future converts to St Gregory. Known as the Illuminator St Gregory forgives the king and returns him to human form and Tiridates converts to Christianity and makes it the official religion of Armenia and probably the oldest country to make Christianity the official religion of state. From the iconic Armenia exhibition currently on at the Met. Some incredibly old objects are on display. The horse has no armour since it makes many directional changes to accomodate for the rider to strike foes.
tiridates 🐗 Oh dear. King Tiridates III of #Armenia, before famously proclaiming Christianity the state religion in 301 CE, behaved very badly when he was rebuffed in an offer of marriage by the beautiful virgin nun #Hripsime. Torturing and killing the entire group of nuns, he became violently ill, adopting the appearance and mannerisms of a wild boar 🐗. Cured by Gregory the Illuminator, repenting his boorish behavior, and amazed at his healing, he converted all of Armenia to Christianity. He has been depicted in his pig-like countenance ever since (here in an Altar Frontal from New Julfa, Iran, 1741 CE; a manuscript illuminated by Vardan of Baghesh in 1569-70 CE; and in the 4th–5th century CE stela from the Monastery of Kharaba, all on view at @metmuseum’s Armenia! exhibition). #tiridates #tiridatesiii #armenianart #Metmuseum #MetArmenia #badbehavior #boorish #piglike #badtemper #mansplaining #therianthropy #jerk #boar #wildboar #cinghiale #medievalart #exhibition #artoftheday #instaart #manuscript #textile #silk #stele #isfahan

According to some scholars, it was not a temple but a tomb and thus survived the universal destruction of pagan structures.

tiridates Kokh (Կոխ) is the Armenian national wrestling, that has been around since the Early Middle Ages. It is one of the oldest forms of wrestling and has influenced the Soviet martial sport Sambo. In Kokh, the winner is the one who throws the opponent on the mat without boosting and/or turning him. Pushing the opponent out of the mat, which has a radius of 7–9 meters, also results in winning. A Kokh fight usually lasts from 5 to 10 minutes. The Kokh fights are often accompanied with Armenian folk music and before the beginning of a fight wrestlers do folk dances. The are two types of Kokh; Lori Kokh and Shirak Kokh. The main difference between the two styles is between the clothing. In Shirak Kokh, wrestlers wear shalwar pants and are topless and were allowed to grab the legs of the opponent. In Lori Kokh, they wear chokha and have to grab the opponent's dress to throw or push them out. Until the late 1980s, Kokh was practiced in rural areas of Armenia, although no professional Kokh athletes existed. Today, about 700 children in Armenia practice Kokh. It has been recorded that King Tiridates III of Armenia won the Ancient Olympic Games in wrestling in 281 AD.

tiridates (repost) The Ardziv Fedayi group was a Hunchakian group of revolutionary militants who fought a great number of battles against the Ottoman Empire independently as well as alongside the ARF. THey took part in the Defence of Van, as well as the revenge attack that followed on the Kurdish tribe. The Hunchakian Party was the first political party to emerge in Ottoman Armenia to encourage revolutionary activity against the Ottoman Turks. The differences between the ARF and Hunchakian party is that while the Dashnaks sought only reforms in the way Armenians were treated, the Hunchakian Party wanted the establishment of a new autonomous Armenia away from Ottoman rule.

tiridates Figure 1: Usually when we think of Cataphracts we think of the
Byzantines, but here is a Armenian cataphract with the Artaxiad dynasty emblem on his spear.

Notice the dirks at their side for use when the shield wall formation breaks.

tiridates This post is to provide some context for the previous post about the Sasuntsi-Davit Tank Division. Sasunti-David is a long loved Armenian national figure who according to stories had supernatural powers tied to his land. These powers are not to be interpreted literally, instead they symbolise the Armenian nation’s love for freedom and independence. As David the giant with superhuman qualities drove Arab’s out of the land, his gigantic size and strength became oral legend and symbolised Armenian characteristics through physical attributes. The Sasuntsi-David Tank Division embodies the Armenian love of independence and freedom through their offensives against Nazi Germany.

tiridates Armenians were the first whole nation to take up Christianity as a religion, the result being that Armenia has become a very faithful country with many thousand year old churches.

Image 1: Echmiadzin was the first church to have been built in Armenia and the fourth eldest church on earth. When St. Gregory the Illuminator had a dream of Jesus coming down from the sky and pounding His hammer into a certain spot, the church was made in that exact place seen in his dream. The name is a compound word from “ichav” and “miadzin”. The first child (mia - one, dzin - birth), coming down, onto where Echmiadzin would be made.
Image 2: Noravank is a Monastery located in Yeghegnadzor in a gorge by the Amaghu river. Compared to Armenian History and other churches, it is said to be “new” and that is clear by it’s name “new monastery”. It was built in the 13th century, 1205 by (Srpazan) Hayr Hovhannes. It is known for its two storey chapel with stairs inside the church leading up to the second level.

Image 3: Tatev Monastery was built in the 9th century and is positioned in southeastern Armenia. In the 14th and 15th centuries. It is a touristic site and the cableway that was opened in 2010 has made it into the Guinness World Records as world's longest non-stop double track cable car.

Image 4: Geghard is an ancient and medieval monastery found in the Kotayk province in Armenia and is a UNESCO listed heritage site. The site was found in the 4th century by St. Gregory the Illuminator.

Image 5: Khorvirap is a monastery located on the plains of Ararat and is very close to the border of turkey. When Armenians hadn’t become Christian yet, King Tiridates III sent Gregory the Illuminator into a dungeon for preaching Christianity. After Armenia became a Christian nation, that dungeon was made into a Church and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia.

tiridates Corbulo's War

This arrangement broke down due to the activities Vologases I of Parthia who in an effort to keep his rivals occupied initiated a war with Armenia. The Eastern arrangement between Rome and the Armenians stipulated that the King of Armenia was to be crowned by the Romans. The Armenian nobility were delighted to have a Parthian Prince come in and take over. The Parthian Prince was interested in hunting, fighting and horses the same as the Armenian elites whereas the Armenian Kings crowned by Rome were Hellenistic dynasts who were more interred in reading the great works of classical Greece. Nero declared war on both Armenia and Parthia this was not a war with Parthia strictly speaking it was fought mainly in Armenia over the Armenian Succession.
Nero sent out a man named Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, who was a strict Disciplinarian, Corbulo was given two legions whipped the soldiers into shape in four years, Corbulo also had to contend with the lack of a logistical to support an operation deep into Armenia. In the year 58 Corbulo was finally ready to launch his campaign which was an absolutely stunning victory. Corbulo marched into Armenia captured the capital Artaxata, sacked it moved on to rampage along the shores of lake Van before heading back to winter on Roman territories. The Romans then installed their own King, Tigranes who attacked the Parthians, the Parthians invaded Armenia, Corbulo had to intervene again and in 64 a treaty was arranged between Roman and Parthia that allowed Tiridates the Parthian Prince to rule in Armenia. But he would have to go to Rome to get his crown.

The #KhorVirap (Armenian: Խոր Վիրապ, meaning deep pit or "deep well") is an #ArmenianApostolicChurch #monastery located in the #Ararat plain in Armenia. Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that #GrigorLusavorich, who later became Saint Gregory the Illuminator, was initially imprisoned here for 13 years by King #Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory subsequently became the king's religious mentor, and they led the proselytizing activity in the Country. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. A chapel was initially built in 642 AD at the site of Kirat Virap by Nerses III the Builder as a mark of veneration to Saint Gregory. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly rebuilt. In 1662, the larger chapel known as the "St. Astvatsatsin" (Holy Mother of God) was built around the ruins of the old chapel, the monastery, the refectory and the cells of the monks. Now, regular Church services are held in this church. It is probably the most visited pilgrimage site in Armenia 🏆 by @arthurlumen @awesomearmenia 🏆 ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #Armenian_Gallery #Armenia #Армения #Հայաստան #Travel #Tourism #InstaTravel #Travelgram #Trip #Tourist #Tourism #instagood #ARMstagram #IG_Armenia #Caucasus #Yerevan #Ереван #YRVN #instamood #TravelPhotography #TravelTheWorld #Mountains #Adventure #Landscape #🇦🇲

It is the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia. It was probably built by king Tiridates I in the first century AD as a temple to the sun god Mihr. After Armenia's conversion to Christianity in the early fourth century, it was converted into a royal summer house of Khosrovidukht, the sister of Tiridates III. According to some scholars it was not a temple but a tomb and thus survived the universal destruction of pagan structures. It collapsed in a 1679 earthquake. Renewed interest in the 19th century led to its eventual reconstruction between 1969 and 1975. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Armenia and the central shrine of Armenian neopaganism.
