In 1988, Audi entered the Trans-Am Series with the 200 turbo quattro by contracting Bob Tullius Group 44 Racing. The car was equipped with the Quattro system. The car was piloted by Hurley Haywood and with both Walter Röhrl and Hans-Joachim Stuck won eight out of thirteen events. Audi moved to IMSA by the end of the season, the SCCA would change the regulation to a two-wheel drive only and banning cars with non-American engines. The Historic Trans-am & IMSA Group is dedicated to the preservation of the cars that ran in the SCCA Trans-am series and the similar IMSA GTO class from 1980 until 1991.
Audi also used the 200 Turbo Quattro 20v as their Group A rally car replacement for the aging Audi Quattro after the FIA elimination of Group B in 1986. The 1987 Group A 200 was driven by former World Rally Champions drivers drivers Hannu Mikkola and Walter Röhrl. The Audi 200 became the first four-wheel-drive car to win the Safari Rally, with Hannu Mikkola driving. The 200 Quattro became the last car Audi campaigned in rallying as a manufacturing team.

Event no.2 of the season went very well. Another third place, even if this one was third of three competitors in my class, I kept my gap off the leaders small and really enjoyed the fast course by Champaign County Sports Car Club. This coming weekend, I’ll be heading to Autobahn-North for a trackcross/tracksprint style event on Saturday and then a more traditional solo event at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday. Then I’ll have a week to prep the car and get ready for the national event! Special thanks to @kristen.martino for putting up with my racecar habits and supporting me through it all!! Also thanks to @jerichomotorsport for helping me find a great deal on competition tires. Can’t wait to get out on track again!
Had such an awesome time driving in my first rally cross this past weekend! Thanks @arin128 for teaching me to give er the beans instead of laying on the brakes. Learned so much from you and I'm stoked to get out there again soon!! And thanks Dan for letting me drive your car! Can't forget to thank Road America for letting us tear up a nicely groomed grass lot. #scca#sccarallycross #rallycross#firstrally#gopro#rxatra#roadamerica
A strong weekend for NextRev Motorsports at America’s National Park of Speed with a 1st and 2nd place finish for James Berlin in the 12 car and a 1st and 3rd place finish for Patrick Price in the 13 car. Car 13 came back faster than ever for this weekend after a quick motor swap due to a blown motor three weeks ago in the June Sprints.
Sometimes even “dumps like a truck” isn’t quite enough. Huge congrats to @gottahaveitgreen197 for outrunning me this weekend! Christie drove the wheels off of her Mustang and ended up outrunning me by 4/10ths of a second. Couldn’t have asked to be outrun by a more awesome person!!! So glad to see her getting fast again!
Yesterday’s autocross was pretty rough for me. Throughout the morning session I was in a funk and totally off my game. In my first 4 runs I spun the car once and experienced the strangest 4wheel drift ever which resulted in me recovering the slide, slowing the car down, and having to go in a circle to make it through the gate I almost missed. That slide still doesn’t make any sense, lol. After lunch I came back, cranked the music up, then got in my groove and focused on slowly improving my times. I continued to do so until my final run where near the last gate I was recovering a slide and the car decided to whip the opposite direction. I recovered in time to commit the ultimate sin... hitting the timing equipment. This is by far the dumbest thing I’ve done so far in my time competing in autocross. I’m just glad the only casualties were some time to reset the timing system, the protective box for the timing equipment, a little compound for the pain, a CAT-5 connector, and my ego. If I continue to Auto-X this car I will want an upgraded front sway bar. That should help keep the back end more planted during transitions. I’ve just got keep owning up to my shortcomings and work on getting smoother.
Thanks to @rumblingv8 for helping me do way better at my second event than I thought I could. I’m a bit crispy today but it was well worth it. I’ll find that three hundredths of a second next time and get my keychain hopefully
Thanks to Perry Aidelbaum for the awesome photos
