Feeling constantly stressed, overwhelmed, and finding yourself overthinking every little detail can get pretty damn exhausting.⠀

For a long time, I turned to unhealthy habits to try to cope. ⠀

However, over time, I’ve learned that the best way to deal with your anxiety is to reset your MINDSET. ⠀

Focus on what you CAN control, and let go of the rest. ⠀

Some reminders for anyone struggling -⠀

I can decide how I want to fuel my body.⠀
I can engage in purposeful movement every day.⠀

movementmindset ONE YEAR.

The girl on the left was struggling - stuck in a degree program she wasn’t passionate about, was battling with a major depressive episode and disordered eating, and an 18 hour drive from the love of her life. 
The girl on the right has put in the WORK. Pursuing an education she genuinely feels EXCITED about, feeling her absolute best mentally and physically, and is apartment hunting with the girlfriend. 
This past year has been one of the most trying, difficult ones yet - but has also given me some incredible opportunities for personal growth and memories.

This summer has been full of new beginnings - a new living situation (SOON), two new job opportunities relevant to my future career, and the jumpstart of my own coaching biz (thanks @tarasimone_fit!). As a way to celebrate new beginnings and challenge myself, I’m starting a new 100 day fitness program starting at the end of July! I can’t wait to push myself a little further out of my comfort zone and get into a new no-excuse workout routine before heading back to school in September!! How have you grown this past year?

My mind started reciting a story just past the half way mark - “it’s so humid, this is so hard....” one of my Key Words “Presence” flashed into my mind and immediately brought me back to the now. I started counting 1,2,3,4...with each step and all of sudden I saw that the forest was covered in these beautiful spiderweb domes. 
It’s amazing the beauty which appears as the chatter of the mind quiets down.

movementmindset I’m a great skateboarder but not by anybody else’s standards 🤣. I’m pretty amazed I can learn to do this at my age, which was my standard for success in starting: could I even balance on it, could I roll on it, could I keep it moving, could I omg, drop in?! Sure it’s inevitable outside influences keep shaking up that success determinant. So much of our lives involves going to GET success, something always outside our reach. Maybe smaller (even the biggest?) successes are inside us already?

movementmindset While there are many paths to recovery and healing, yoga is exceptionally helpful in teaching us to inhabit our bodies more fully, to step toward a more conscious and deliberate new self and to rise strong and move toward the life within us and around us, despite those challenges that inevitability arrive.

This is why I love yoga so much. It is truly a movement adaptogen that adjusts to any body and to any mobility needs. We all have different abilities, and yoga can meet us exactly where we are today.

movementmindset I am a slow walker. I'm sure that's a relative term. But even in Berkeley I'm slower than most of the folks passing me by.

I find a lot of benefit in very slow walking for my balance for muscle repair and for developing the awareness of what muscles are engaging through the process of moving.

When I am concerned about what other people think about my slowly moving older fat body, I either stop walking as much or I go faster than feels good to me.

Maybe in the future, my speed will change, maybe I'll walk slower. Who knows, but what I do know is I have 100% control over what I think about my body and its function.

One of the most important things about exercising for me is being part of a community.
(One of the main reasons I love Crossfit!) I attended a few Midnight Runners events last year, but cancled my membership for a while, as my motivation to run in the winter is poor.

I decided to sign up to one of their Sunday long runs, and to be honest I was really nervous!!
I had not run since mid Feb, and  did not feel capable of running 20k. Also going to a group on your own is super scary! (Despite the MR crew being super lovely). However I knew if I kept waiting until I was ready, I'd keep putting off.

It was a great day out, and the community and change in scenery reminded me why I prefer running in a group so much  more than running on my own.

If you're thinking about joining a group and you're scared, go and do it! (You won't be the only one feeling nervous)
Midnight runners is a great place to start if you're in London.

movementmindset FIND A NEW PERSPECTIVE 
FEBRUARY CHALLENGE 
So when someone I know told me there was a place as a pacer for the 2hr 50 min at the Queen Elizabeth Half with @runarchy, I had to say yes right?

I had run the hackney half twice, but this had been with the focus of getting a PB. I looked forward to running with a different focus.

A few thoughts/rambings:

I have never paced a race before. This was surprsing tricky, and took a fair bit of practice. I also ended up around a minute over on the day- although heard its incredibly difficult to get it exact!

Running slower means running for longer, and I actually this found it harder, particularly the training runs, which were very boring and I'm sure a bit more painful.

I really enjoyed the race on the day. The course wasn't amazing, but I loved cheering people on as I went along.
It felt like a very different experience to the other halfs I had completed.

I'm very keen to find my next pacing opportunity. They are quite hard to find, but keep your eyes peeled 🧐

Let me know what your ideas are on how you can change your perspective?

When me exercise/move to ‘fix’ or change something we don’t like about our body; or even when we move from a place of fear - trying to make sure that we ‘maintain’ our body, we become disembodied & disconnected. ⠀
⠀
When we became so focused on our goal that we have the inability to enjoy our movement in the moment.  The problem isn’t with the goal itself. It’s the fact that we (sometimes) get so fixated on the result, that we begin striving for a fleeting feeling (that we believe would come when we achieve our goal) that we could actually be enjoying right NOW! ⠀

When we move for energetic nourishment, we become more connected. We experience our body, through embodied movement. ⠀
⠀
Why does this matter? Your relationship with movement reflects your relationship with your body & your self. Which ultimately affects our relationship with others & with life itself! ⠀

When you ask someone "How are they doing today," mean it. If need be, ask them again to get clarity and maybe even the Truth. Often times, people will say they're doing fine but on the inside they are hurting. You never know what another person may be going through. Reach out your ✋hand to lift them up! This is what we explored in micro, and it is this element of movement education which we believe has so much to offer to the world. Yes, this exercise challenged our musculature. Yes, it forced mobility adaptation in the moment. But it also provided a way to explore going beyond our own perceived capabilities as humans.

If we make that a focus of our work, and the strength, mobility, size and skill a secondary concern, then the potential and application of our movement practice nears infinite.

I’ve seen a few posts & articles around exercise + fitness lately. Some evidence based, and lots that are opinion & personal experience based.... Statements like “Walking is the best exercise during pregnancy” [implied - because any other movement comes from a place of disrespect to our body & an inability to honour it“ 🤔 Or my personal favourite “Women who Run/Lift/CrossFit [insert any movement that can be High Intensity/High Effort] are struck in a masculine mindset” 😲🙄 I call BS! ⠀

It’s not the type of movement that matters, it’s the #MovementMindset that’s important. It’s the intention behind the movement that’s most meaningful. ⠀

When you are connected to your intention behind your movement, and when you can choose movements that both reflect that intention & remain aligned with that intention then we don’t get caught up in trying to ‘fix’ our body, or prove anything to anyone. We simply move in a way that feels good to us. We move in a way that causes energetic nourishment for our body, in any given moment. ⠀

Yoga, Walking, CrossFit, Running, Lifting, Dancing.... it’s all movement! No one should be made to feel bad about how they want to move in their body! Just because a woman chooses to run rather than walk during her pregnancy, it doesn’t mean she’s “trying to prove that she can do more than the next girl”. If she’s connected to her intention, it’s simply how she chooses to move. ⠀

It’s the intention behind the movement that’s most meaningful. ⠀ ⠀ When you are connected to your intention behind your movement, and when you can choose movements that both reflect that intention & remain aligned with that intention then we don’t get caught up in trying to ‘fix’ our body, or prove anything to anyone. We simply move in a way that feels good to us. We move in a way that causes energetic nourishment for our body, in any given moment. ⠀ ⠀ Yoga, Walking, CrossFit, Running, Lifting, Dancing.... it’s all movement! No one should be made to feel bad about how they want to move in their body! Just because a woman chooses to run rather than walk during her pregnancy, it doesn’t mean she’s “trying to prove that she can do more than the next girl”. If she’s connected to her intention, it’s simply how she chooses to move. ⠀ ⠀ No more movement shaming! Go be in YOUR body in YOUR way 😘⠀ ⠀

The decision about what we learn is up to us. We have the choice. This year  I chose to learn a proper #handstand 
Why? Because it’s a simple skill 😩 in theory 🙃

Approaching my 40th birthday this year I more and more follow the approach of stopping when I am performing at my peak. Not going the extra round. Not relying solely on the idea of repetition being the mother of skill (of course it still is!!!) In the case of handstand practice, I stop the practice when I still feel strong and energized. Not when I am exhausted or after the 500th failed repetition. It works really well for me at this point.

Not only in #handstandpractice but also in #martialarts #training and even when #sparring in #brazilianjiujitsu 
What you see in the video above (or below?) is my last handstand attempt of the day. It was my best attempt and I felt great afterwards. Ready to go back and try again... like my old school training mind is used to still. But no! I stopped. Feeling strong and great overall.

Ready to come back tomorrow. Saving this information for my next session 🤔

movementmindset I think it's fairly obvious, If you want to get in shape you need to move. 😮

You aren't going to get in shape on the couch. 🛋️ But if you are having a hard time getting up off the couch. 
Here's an easy trick:

Imagine yourself getting up and actually enjoying your exercise of choice. 💭

That's right thinking about it and seeing yourself doing it will put you in the driver's seat and help catapult you into action.  Imagine yourself in your workout close, moving in a way that feels right for your body that day. 🤸‍♀️ And if you aren't sure what to do.. ❤️Keep it simple.  Find something you like and do that. ❤️Then find something that challenges you so you can keep getting better every day. ❤️ Find something that can strengthen your body, something that is good for the heart, and something that helps to improve your mind, body and spirit connection. 😌This trick works even on the laziest of Sundays!!! Happy Sweating! ✌️❤️
