A solo hiker completes the last stretch to the summit of Mount St. Helens. Today marks the 39th anniversary of this Cascadian eruption. One of the most remarkable images that I’ve seen from that day is a climber atop Mt. Adams, seen here in the distance, as a giant ash plume spilled out of the volcano I’m standing on. It was even more remarkable to finally climb up there last year and look down into the crater, ash whipping up into my face and covering me and my gear in layers of grit. Each side of this mountain I’ve explored is beautiful and haunting in its own way. We’ve learned so much from what has happened in the wake of this eruption and still have much more to go. ————————————————————————-

39 years ago this view into the crater didn’t exist. Loowit was in-tact and almost 10,000’ tall. She erupted in spectacular fashion in 1980 and is still active. Looking into the crater at the lava dome and newly-formed Crater Glacier. It’s a special place. #volcanoskiing#mtsthelens#loowit#glaciersmakemehappy
It’s my favorite Land Spirit’s special day! Loowit, Lawetlat’la, Mount Saint Helens. You who are lady and deity. You who show us what power and transformation looks like from all sides. You who beautifully dazzle with your snow cap and your bare caldera. Sometimes (esp in late stage capitalism/white supremacy/Herero patriarchy) when pressure is often mounting and there’s every kind of shit going on in the world, I feel like dramatically blowing my top too. Thank you for showing me the way. ⠀
I adore you. I pray to you. I make offerings to you. I love you. ⠀
If you were standing in this spot 40 years ago you’d just be looking at rock and snow. 39 years ago you probably would have been vaporized. But today, you now get a look at the sheer power and magnitude of Loowit, otherwise known as Mount St. Helens, and the 1980 eruption.
Our beautiful stratovolcanoes always deserve our utmost respect. And May 18th is a yearly reminder.

Awake at 2:30, hot french press poured for groggy hands, packs loaded, boots on the earth. Up and up and up, through dark by headlamp as night flourished to hazy early light. Conversation and quiet, relentless snow covered slopes leading to the summit crater rim. Bright blue skies and heat of morning, Oreos and ham sandwiches, in awe of being here now. Laughter escaping our chapped lips as we slid back to the tree line to shelter in cool shade. Grateful, so grateful for this life. ✨
