Today is a special day all over Japan where people celebrate Tanabata, the Star Festival. Tanabata is celebrated to commemorate the romantic story of two lovers represented by the stars Vega and Altair who are only allowed to meet each other once a year as long as the skies are clear. It is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, which is July 7th in the modern calendar.
On Tanabata, people write wishes on small pieces of colored paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo trees. These become beautiful wish trees. On the following day, the decorated trees are floated on a river or in the ocean and burned as an offering. .
Of course I wrote my wishes in tanzaku. One of my wishes is I hope I can graduate until I get a doctoral degree in Japan on time 🎋🎋🙏🏻😊💖

Feeling extra blessed today 💫 For those who don’t know I’ve been very sick this past year dealing with intestinal issues. After doing what seems like endless gastroenterologist visits, invasive procedures, and tests I have finally been diagnosed with a Sucrose Deficiency. This is a rare genetic disease, and it took up to 3 weeks just to get my medicine delivered but today it finally arrived 🙌 I feel like I get to close one chapter of my life, and open another one which focuses on my recovery and getting back to normal and hopefully not being in chronic pain. I’m so thankful for my friends and family for being there for what was the hardest year of my life. Can’t wait to start taking my medicine and start this journey to feel normal again💫 #onedayatatime#gsid#csid#sucrosedeficiency#sucraid
Another option instead of plain water or juice. Lime (or lemon) in water. I’ve also done strawberries and cucumber in water to mix it up. Typically I give her water down Honest kids grape juice if I give her something other than water but she gulps it down so fast! So just another option!

Amazing honor today to receive the Sylvia Friedman award from Grammercy Stuyvesant Independent Democrats. Sylvia was an incredible community leader, elected official and activist who left an indelible legacy and took on causes that often weren’t popular or in the news but that made a difference to so many in need. #GSID#resist#census2020#CountMeIn
Sadie’s many lounging positions this weekend. This is why I haaaaaate having her try new foods. I feel like a bad mom when this is how she spends her weekend. Needless to say the 1/2 of a larabar didn’t work out so well. I still can’t believe 1” of food can do this 😯 But this little chick never would have led you to believe she wasn’t feeling good other than laying around everywhere. Hopefully she’ll be back to her normal wild self tomorrow when Nan Nan gets her in the morning ☀️

“My name is Kotaro and I’m a master student at the Graduate School of International Development (GSID). My life would have been totally different without international interaction here in Nagoya University. At the end of my freshman year, I started visiting IEEC (International Education & Exchange Center) to find something fun besides classes or a part-time job. For me, who had spent all the time in a local city, it was a big challenge to talk to and hang out with international students, but I was so lucky to have nice friends that I felt more fun day by day. This experience made me challenge an exchange program at the North Carolina State University in America in my junior year, and now study at GSID, where students from many developing countries come and study together in English. By the trigger of such interaction with international students and cultures, I found out a goal of my career (and also my current research theme), which is connecting the sophisticated technologies and the development experience of Japan with the massive potential of Southeast Asian countries. My past challenges would have never been achieved with the supports of all the people around me; my parents, teachers and staff at IEEC, and friends. I want to thank them from my heart here. Thanks to hardworking of IEEC teachers and staff, there are more exchange students from various countries here and we have a bigger chance to try an exchange program of more universities than my time. So for one remaining year until I graduate, I would like to devote myself to enlighten younger students like me, who have no experience and never imagine to study abroad before, and help their first step by promoting cross-cultural interaction of Japanese and international students.”-Kotaro Shimada (Japan) #nuintlstudents#nufsa#nagoyauniversity #名古屋大学 #留学生 #internationalstudents#japan#gsid ••• NUFSA features an international student every week to introduce the many faces of Nagoya University.
