While 7% contained, the #eaglecreekfire continues to burn as the winds switched direction and have moved more east. We can't even begin to thank everyone for their efforts to protect our Gorge. As a start, @thunderislandbrewing, our local Cascade Locks watering hole, has started a #gofundme page to raise money for the local volunteer fire departments working to contain the fire in their community. Did you know that one of the best ways to visit the town of Cascade Locks and travel on the Columbia River Gorge is to go by boat? And not just any boat, we suggest the @columbiagorgesternwheeler. Their season started May 1st, what are you waiting for? Come out any enjoy the beautiful sights today! 📸: @uncagethesoulproductions
With a few days of rain, things are looking up in the Columbia River Gorge. The #eaglecreekfire is now 46% contained, the west bound lane of I-84 is open, overall air quality has improved and Cascade Locks businesses are back open! (<- You can access Cascade Locks via SR 14 and the Bridge of the Gods.) The fire's impacted trails and roads are still closed to the public for the time being. Please steer clear for your safety and the safety of our brave crews. 📸: @portlandexploregon
One of my favorite places in the Columbia River Gorge.. I think a visit is needed soon!

Sunday, June 23: Bring your family and friends to our Annual Summer Picnic on Thunder Island's Marine Park in #cascadelocks. This free, family-friendly event will feature live music by Jamba Marimba and updates by Friends staff and board. gorgefriends.org/picnic
This year it'll be a true, old-fashioned community picnic - not a potluck. You bring the lunch you want for you and your friends and family. Drinks, desserts, and snacks are on us.
We'll also host a mini-tabling fair with information on our programming, along with some family-friendly activities.
There’s a new PCT monument in Cascade Locks💚💙. It’s always sentimental for me when I visit the PCT, but seeing that monument was especially so❣️ We hiked to Dry Creek Falls, a side trip along the PCT. It was cool to see how the forest has been recovering since the major fire in the Gorge two summers ago. We also went to Beacon Rock (not on the PCT) on the Washington side. It’s a unique short one with a zig zag walkway that snakes its way to the top. A fun relaxed day in the Columbia Gorge:) #columbiarivergorge#cascadelocks#pctig#pacificcresttrail
This is my second time this year hiking Dry Creek Falls, but it felt like a new hike without all the snow! It’s about 4.5 miles round trip with 900 feet elevation gain. There are beautiful views along the way and it is fascinating to see the new green plants growing out of the burnt landscape. With so many Gorge waterfall hikes closed, I’m so thankful this one is open 🥰
Gashes scorch down my breast,
deep, clawed trenches.
Incisions conjure my shrieks like icicles ablaze.
Tooth divots mark a bloody wreath on my nape,
a ruthless bite from a merciful opponent.
Shame singes gutters of flesh.
Panting in the grass, I behold him through tears.
Soulful are his eyes as our gazes lock.
In one shared glance, he recounts my wounds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Were my claws hidden from you?
Did I conceal my fangs?
Was my coat offered for your possession?
Who requested your relentless pursuit?
Is your presence here by invitation?
Little bird, I am a grizzly."
Hazelnut fur gleams as he turns.
Burly limbs majestically stride, mountain-bound.
Unspoken words torment my sanity.
Beautiful brute, loyal to his essence.
Each blow delivered was consistent with his growls.
Thunderous warnings had come to fruition. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hoodwinked fantasies were to blame.
Desire to wear his coat was the cause of my ail.
No soul incited my quest, but my own.
Brazenly, I sacrificed myself.
Arrogance spurred me to conquer his magnificence.
All that I wanted was not mine to claim.
A traitor would stare back in my reflection.
Mangled wings would recall my foolery in flight.
Songs would not soon return to my beak. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How daunting the path home would be.
Solace is not found in a den, with a bear.
A bird heals in her nest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
