LOW BACK PAIN
Lower back killing you? Chances are your glutes and hamstrings are weak!
Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon problem. Along with weakness, back pain commonly arises when people sit too much (usually work related) or have an inability to hinge properly at the hips, so lets go through these issues -
The number 1 cause of low back pain is weakness, usually in the posterior chain. Strengthening the glutes and hamstrings is the first point of call in alleviating back pain, while also addressing any pelvic tilt issues that are contributing too. This will involve a combination of the big movements, such as squats and deadlifts, as well as smaller, more isolated movements in order to address individual issues.
2⃣ TOO MUCH TIME SITTING
This can be a tough one with people's jobs often requiring extensive periods of sitting at a desk or in a car. To combat this, we can target some specific things in the gym to address tightness and posture. Keeping length through the lateral leg (the ITB, TFL and lateral quads), adductors and hip flexors issue crucial to managing this, so stretching and foam rolling become important for people in seated jobs. Also tying into point 1⃣, maintaining strength in the posterior chain is crucial so that the muscular and postural balance of the hips can be maintained.
3⃣ INABILITY TO HINGE
A really common problem, but also really easy to address. For a number of reasons, people often lack the ability to hinge (pushing the hips back without dropping through the knees). As a result, when people bend at the hips, the low back musculature becomes responsible for too much and the glutes and hamstrings go on holiday. This feeds into the above points, because too much sitting contributes to this, and this contributes to the posterior chain weakness that we mentioned. As such, learning to hip hinge properly will help strengthen the posterior chain, helping alleviate the strain on the lower back.
